Course Description
This course meets the Cultural Competency course requirement for Illinois.
Health disparities in the United States continue to widen, and allied health professionals are uniquely positioned to address them at the point of care. This course traces the evolution from traditional cultural competence frameworks to the more effective, evidence-based model of cultural humility — a lifelong orientation grounded in self-reflection, awareness of power imbalances, and genuine partnership with patients and communities. You'll examine how social determinants of health, implicit bias, medical mistrust, and historical trauma directly shape the clinical encounters you navigate every day. Through case studies drawn from physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing settings, you'll practice applying communication strategies that support more equitable care. Whether you're treating a patient with limited English proficiency, working with LGBTQ+ populations, or navigating cross-cultural pain assessment, this course gives you actionable tools to improve outcomes for your most vulnerable patients.
